I went out to dinner with a friend of mine last night, and I told her that I had a poem that had been floating around in my head for the last week or so that I couldn’t get out of my head. She said it was because I hadn’t written it down. So this morning I wrote it down….and here it is. Remember that I’m a midwife, not a poet. *smile*

I forgot to say I love you
And that I’m not as mad as I pretend
I forgot to savor the moment
That I laughed with a friend
I forgot that children grow so quickly
And that grandchildren do too
I forgot to appreciate my family
For all of the things that they do
I forgot to thank God for my health
And a body strong, forgiving and kind
I forgot to appreciate the years
When they were ahead of me instead of behind
I forgot to smell the rain outside
As I closed the window that one night
I forgot to love enough, forgive my friend,
Laugh at the joke, and cry for what’s not right.
I forgot to say goodnight when I closed my eyes
As I laid down to sleep
I forgot to smile as you took my hand in yours
I always thought life would keep
I forgot how much I would leave behind
And how quickly time flies,
I forgot that I have another day to remember
It’s okay to close my eyes.
